What actually sets the price

  • The sofa: 39% of the bill. At the median ($1,648), it is the biggest line of a mid-range living room. Decide it first; the rest fits around it.
  • The media console: the widest spread. The top quarter costs 6.6 times the bottom quarter ($199 against $1,309). This is where a budget is won or lost.
  • Wall art, Plant: under $253 at the median. They are what finishes a room, not what breaks the budget: cutting them to save a few dollars leaves a room that looks unfinished.

Before you buy: the measurements

Measure the wall the sofa will stand against first: it sets everything else. The rug should take at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs — a small rug floating in the middle of the room is the most common mistake, and the cheapest one to avoid. The coffee table sits 16–18 inches from the sofa and runs about two thirds of its length.

How we split a budget

An algorithm that “maximises value under a cap” spends everything on the sofa and delivers a room with no rug and no light. We first reserve a share of the budget for each piece, the way a decorator quotes a job, then find the best product that fits inside each share.

Common questions

What is the minimum budget to furnish a living room?

On a $1,000 budget, our engine put together a complete living room for $939: sofa, rug, coffee table, media console, armchair, floor lamp, wall art, plant. Every piece is a product on sale, at the price recorded on September 18, 2026.

How much of the budget goes on the sofa?

At the median price, the sofa is 39% of a mid-range living room ($1,648 of $4,221). When we split a budget we set aside 32% for it: it anchors the room, and it is the piece you keep longest.

Where do these prices come from?

From 5,313 pieces on sale at 368 online merchants, recorded on September 18, 2026. Every merchant weighs the same in the medians however many products it lists: a brand with 400 sofas counts as one shop, not 400.
