What actually sets the price

  • The desk: 31% of the bill. At the median ($689), it is the biggest line of a mid-range home office. Decide it first; the rest fits around it.
  • The shelving: the widest spread. The top quarter costs 5.8 times the bottom quarter ($180 against $1,046). This is where a budget is won or lost.

Before you buy: the measurements

The chair matters more than the desk: it is what you sit on eight hours a day, and the piece people most regret buying cheap. A 48 × 24 inch top is enough for one screen and a keyboard, 55 inches for two. Put the desk at right angles to the window: facing it you squint, with your back to it the screen reflects.

Put together by our engine, modern style, at the prices recorded on September 18, 2026. It is the same room growing with the budget: the engine first gives each piece its share of the budget, then chooses inside each share.

Prices move: these date from the survey. When you run the tool, every price is re-checked at the merchant before it is shown, and a product taken off sale is replaced.

How we split a budget

An algorithm that “maximises value under a cap” spends everything on the sofa and delivers a room with no rug and no light. We first reserve a share of the budget for each piece, the way a decorator quotes a job, then find the best product that fits inside each share.

Common questions

What is the minimum budget to furnish a home office?

On a $1,000 budget, our engine put together a complete home office for $896: desk, desk chair, shelving, rug, desk lamp. Every piece is a product on sale, at the price recorded on September 18, 2026.

How much of the budget goes on the desk?

At the median price, the desk is 31% of a mid-range home office ($689 of $2,193). When we split a budget we set aside 30% for it: it anchors the room, and it is the piece you keep longest.

Where do these prices come from?

From 3,466 pieces on sale at 292 online merchants, recorded on September 18, 2026. Every merchant weighs the same in the medians however many products it lists: a brand with 400 sofas counts as one shop, not 400.
